Second Hand Heart

Second Hand Heart

Next we have lot three hundred and twenty:
A passably portable second-hand heart.
It needs tender care for it’s stitched down the middle
Where once on a time it burst quite apart.

It’s had just one owner who cherished it dearly,
For years and some months, it’s hardly been used.
It’s dusty and musty but generally quite sound
Though a recent encounter has left a large bruise.

What will you give for this cardiac trinket?
Who is the one that will treat it with care?
Is there anyone here who will bid for it today?
I’ll start you at free, or a purse of fresh air.

There’s nobody here who wants this memento—
No takers at all for the second-hand heart.
Take it away and send it to landfill—
After all, it’s not valuable art.

What’s that I hear? Somebody wants it?
The indistinct person sat right at the back
Offers their own heart to settle the payment.
Sold! Please collect your lot from the rack.
